FiveM Coming to Consoles: A Detailed Report

FiveM, the platform used for GTA RP among various mods to GTA Online, is set to come to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles according to a new report. Not only is it expected to change GTA Online forever, but it also seems like it will arrive sooner than expected. There's a lot of speculation and conflicting reports happening in the GTA community, and we'll do our best to cover all sides.

Background on Rockstar's Acquisition of Cfx.re

A year ago, Rockstar Games acquired Cfx.re, the team behind FiveM. The announcement sparked excitement and curiosity about how Rockstar might utilize FiveM for GTA VI and potentially bring it to consoles. This acquisition was particularly surprising given previous actions against modders by Rockstar's parent company, Take-Two Interactive.

This new report also addresses various issues that have occurred in the workplace since Rockstar Games purchased the group. There have also been criticisms made by the FiveM founder and current Community Moderator, which will be shared later in the article.

FiveM Founder Not Involved in Acquisition Talks

According to a report published by the fansite GTA Central on Tuesday, several significant claims were made by sources they spoke to. Firstly, regarding the acquisition of Cfx.re, it appears that there were internal issues.

Evidently, FiveM creator NTA had not been involved in the talks with Rockstar and Take-Two over the sale of Cfx.re until it was nearly finalized. Any meetings were reportedly conducted behind her back since late 2022. GTA Central claims Rockstar Games purchased Cfx.re for $20 million.

Rockstar Games has bought companies in the past, such as Angel Studios for $41 million in 2002, which became Rockstar San Diego of Red Dead Redemption fame. Most recently, they acquired Santa Monica-based motion capture specialists Standard Deviation. We reported how Standard Deviation has since become Rockstar Games LA and has been hiring for NPCs.

Post-Acquisition Developments

Rockstar's Integration of Cfx.re

Following the acquisition of the Cfx.re team, Rockstar Games reportedly offered all members the option to work at their nearest office or continue working from home, as everyone at Cfx.re had been working remotely.

About six months into Rockstar Games' ownership of Cfx.re, its founder was reportedly "thrown out twice" due to unspecified reasons. All we know from GTA Central's report is that NTA had complaints lodged against them and had violated a contract. There was also a brief shutdown of FiveM linked to NTA.

Take-Two reportedly stated that NTA's "actions affected millions of players and damaged Rockstar's credibility, as they had promised that the acquisition would improve service." The founder has since left the team she created.

Workplace Environment Concerns

One former FiveM developer claims Rockstar viewed them as an unfortunate acquisition for various reasons, despite their immense talent. Another told GTA Central it was "a highly toxic environment where we had to suffer from significant mismanagement."

Some of the accounts covered by GTA Central have been met with conflict online. It's impossible to determine who is telling the truth and whether inconsistencies or misinformation are being used to support a particular side. Moreover, NTA was not given a heads-up about the GTA Central article. It was written and published without her knowledge and without any opportunity to respond until afterward.

FiveM Founder Responds

NTA, the founder of Cfx.re/FiveM, has responded to the claims made in GTA Central's article. The FiveM creator posted a series of tweets explaining she "had nothing to do with said article" and that it seems like it was "barely proofread" and "full of venting."

She went on to state that "most of the contents, as far as they'd come from me... seem to be pieced together from forum posts and my old tweet thread... and exaggeration from people with silly anger towards things."

Is FiveM Officially Coming to GTA Online This Year?

According to ex-FiveM developers GTA Central spoke to, Rockstar Games had been working on a "FiveM Killer" for about two years before purchasing Cfx.re. Now that they own FiveM, they might be taking that and implementing a version of it within GTA Online.

GTA Central's sources suggest that a new creative project is coming to GTA Online in late summer, not developed by the FiveM team but by Rockstar themselves. It seems like it will be PC-only to start with, followed by "next-gen consoles shortly thereafter."

Last month, we reported how Rockstar added a new public_mission_creator file in the latest GTA Online update. In February, we also reported that Rockstar Games hired many people for the FiveM team to work on the "Creator Platform."

Sources also speculated that this project might be some kind of "conversion tool from FiveM." GTA Central also speculates that progress could see Rockstar taking full control of FiveM, meaning they own all the content and can monetize it.

Take-Two Interactive's CEO said last year, "We'd like to monetize that if we can," regarding GTA RP and modding. Other popular games like Roblox, Minecraft, and Fortnite have healthy creator economies. GTA Online has it too with RP servers, mods, YouTubers, streamers, etc., but not officially in-game.

Given that GTA Online is still popular but nearing the end of its lifecycle, Rockstar could begin testing things like this new content creator project ahead of GTA 6. We're over a year away from GTA VI's release, and content for GTA Online may slow down. A public "mission creator" could revitalize the game as fans wait for the next iteration of GTA Online in GTA VI.

Cfx.re Moderator Plans to Shut Down Claims

While there has been no official statement from Cfx.re, Rockstar Games, or Take-Two, a Community Moderator for Cfx.re posted tweets dismissing claims of FiveM coming to consoles. They said:

"Please don't believe anything about 'FiveM on console,' unless it comes from an official statement, whether it's through the discord community, forums https://forums.cfx.re or a Rockstar statement."

It is worth noting that "Most Community Moderators are not Cfx.re employees," according to this Community Moderator. Their statement is also not an official one posted by Cfx.re as a whole.
